Technology is developing rapidly, and your company’s cabling infrastructure will need to keep up with accelerating technological and business requirements. Selecting the right solutions will conserve time and resources, future proofing your network for up to a decade.
3G and 4G Ethernet infrastructure have been adequate in the past. However, the modern digital era will demand much greater data capacity. The 10G network is a solution that enables 10 gigabits per second networks connected to one another, the Internet, and data centers. If your existing network is running on Cat5e cabling, an upgrade to Cat6a will be needed to allow 10G transmission. It is currently the choice for professionals for structured cabling networks.
Three Types of Cat6a
There are three types of Cat6a cables, UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair), S/UTP or F/UTP (Shielded Twisted or Foiled Twisted Pair), and SFTP (Shielded and Foiled Twisted Pair). Each type can support a 10G network for up to 100 meters (328 feet), attaining the most rapid Ethernet connection.
UTP Ethernet cable is made up of twisted pairs of wires. The cable is individually shielded with a metal foil, increasing the cable’s outer diameter. Individual foil shields significantly decrease crosstalk. In addition, UTP cables provide a lower DC resistance, resulting in better PoE application support.
Featuring unshielded pairs, F/UTP and S/UTP cables are shielded by a single metal foil intended to block electrical noise that causes interference. Its configuration provides superior heat dissipation, allowing the minimization of temperature spikes within a bundle of PoE (Power over Ethernet) energized cables.
A mix of F/UTP and S/UTP, an SFTP cable has foil shields wrapped around individual twisted wires, which provides the greatest level of protection from interference. Its double shielding enables the fastest data transmission over 10G networks. In industrial environments, SFTP is a solid selection for 10G networks.
